The Mobiles Shack
Written by Gray R.

Otterbox7-8-10

Never one to disappoint, OtterBox has a whole new group of cases now available for many popular devices. These include Commuter Series™ cases for the LG Ally™, LG GW620 smartphone, HTC Imagio™, Nokia X6 and Samsung Moment™, as well as a Defender Series™ case for the HTC Hero.

We have always been impressed by the OtterBox quality, and if you want a case that will make your device last forever you should look to no one else. Hopefully the iPhone 4 cases come out soon as I know many are itching to get an OtterBox for their iPhone 4 as well!

Droid 2 in late August? E-mail
The Mobiles Shack
Written by Gray R.

Motorola-Droid-Front-Open-VZW

Could it be that the Droid 2 is coming yet this summer? Engadget is reporting that it definitely looks that way with a potential launch date of August 23rd.

The Droid 2, which is a successor to the original Motorola Droid on Verizon Wireless, will likely be one of the first new phones released with Froyo (Android 2.2). It sounds like some already released Droid phones might beat it, potentially getting Froyo in July, but it still should prove to be a hot seller since it is in the same slider format that started the Droid craze.

Droid X and iPhone 4 cameras go head to head E-mail
The Mobiles Shack
Written by Gray R.

DROIDX-iPhone4-Cameras

BGR takes the iPhone 4 and Droid X cameras out for a little comparison in the sun and indoors and the results are quite surprising.

It definitely seems like Steve’s claims of them working hard on the iPhone 4’s camera were true. For being 5mp in comparison to the Droid X’s 6mp or 8mp (depending on the mode), the iPhone has much better sharpness and color reproduction in my opinion. There are some shots that the Droid X does do quite well with though, so it is far from a horrible phone camera.

See all the shots over at Boy Genius Report.

Outside with the iPhone 4 video camera E-mail
The Mobiles Shack
Written by Gray R.

One more test of the iPhone 4’s new video camera. This time we took the iPhone 4 outside to see how its performance was. We also transferred the video to our computer first before uploading to YouTube, so the quality is dependent on YouTube alone and was not compressed or edited before uploading.

Please note that we will have iPhone 4 case and accessory reviews coming shortly. Otterbox, Hard Candy Cases, SGP, BodyGuardz and others will be featured so make sure to check back soon.

iPhone 4 video camera test E-mail
The Mobiles Shack
Written by Gray R.

Another look at a new iPhone 4 feature, the video camera. The new 5 megapixel camera seems to do a great job and tap to focus is very nice. There also is a video light which I did not know about (I thought it was only flash) that seems to do a great job when things get dark.

Take a look at the video below that we made entirely with the iPhone 4 and uploaded directly to YouTube. Note that the iPhone 4 does compress things a bit before uploading.

iPhone 4 Gyroscope video demo E-mail
The Mobiles Shack
Written by Gray R.

Arguably one of the most interesting new hardware features on the iPhone 4 is the gyroscope. This feature adds more axis of tracking to the iPhone’s hardware and allows developers to create some really neat things.

One app that is out now and takes advantage is Gun Range (iTunes Link). We take it for a demo in the video below.

ARCTIC_Keyboard_and_Mice

ARCTIC, the company that has brought you great PC accessories like the ARCTIC Freezer Pro line of coolers, has released a set of new PC input accessories.

Their new K381 keyboard, available in black and white, looks like a slim design inspired by the sleek Apple desktop keyboards. In the mouse department, the M551 and M571 look to be good entries to the gaming mouse segment though a bit more simplistic than some of the more crazy designs out there today. All items will MSRP for less than $30 USD.

You can see them all over at ARCTIC’s site:

SAR for iPhone 4 is average, beats 3GS E-mail
The Mobiles Shack
Written by Gray R.

iPhone4-SAR

Cell phone Specific Absorption Rates (SAR) are becoming a bigger and bigger topic these days. The FCC limit is 1.6 W/kg and it has not been proven that anything below that limit has any effect at all, yet it still is worrying to some and San Francisco is passing a law to make retailers post the SAR rates by all phones in stores.

So how does the new iPhone 4 fair in the SAR department? Well quite average at 1.17 W/kg. It is not near the lowest handsets that are in the 0.14 - .50 W/kg range, but it is quite a bit less than the highest radiators that bump right into the FCC’s 1.6 W/kg limit. Interestingly enough, the iPhone 4 also comes in lower than the 3GS which was tested at 1.19 W/kg. So it is not going to be the lowest SAR phone we have ever seen, but is a bit better then the past iPhone and many other phones on the market.

You can see the full list of over 1,000 phones in the EWG database.
