Tech Islands was happy to be able to take a quick look at one of the most interesting new PC concepts from Gateway. The Gateway One is a take on the all in one PC concept that the Apple iMac has had the monopoly on for many years.
Gateway has obviously spent a lot of time designing their new All in One concept from the ground up. Taking it out of the box there really is barely anything to setup. There is only the cord going from the back of the main unit to the power supply and then a cord going from the power supply to the outlet! The keyboard and mouse are wireless and everything else including the... (Click Read More) speakers are integrated into the main unit. There also are a few inputs and outputs including USB, Firewire, Headphones, Line In, and a Card Reader on the side of the Gateway One.
To keep clutter on your desk even lower, the power supply brick has connections for USB, Ethernet, and optical audio. This means you really only need to have one cord coming onto your desk!
For those of us that want to upgrade the unit at all, opening it is as simple as sliding to levers on the bottom, it is a totally screw less design. The whole back of the Gateway One then opens like a door and even has a hinge to hold it open.
Even the hard drive(s) are screw less on the Gateway One. There are two bays (one of which comes filled with a hard drive) for 3.5" SATA Hard Drives. Adding another hard drive is as simple as sliding it into the slot:
All the internals seem to be made by Intel, including the Main board, Wireless, Processor, and Video Card (integrated X3100).
Overall I was very impressed by the Gateway One. It has a lot of originality in its design and everything is made very well. You also cannot beat only having one cord on your desk! |
