Movie2MemCard
http://movie2memcard.kvmd.com/

Ever wished there was an easy way to get your favourite movie files into a "PPC suited" size on your PDA?

Well now you can!!

Movie2MemCard will take your video files in .rm, .wmv, .avi, .mpg and .mov format and resize and convert them to a format for your Windows Media Player enabled Pocket PC.

Note: This is a PC based application. It does not run directly on PPC.

What I liked:

Remarkably simple interface. For those who have done these conversion by hand it's often a painful process. Movie2MemCard makes this a trivial task in most cases.

Simply select the output file format (ie, Windows Mobile 2003 devices (WMP9)), the input file (through an explorer window pop-up) and you're halfway there.

There is a drop down list where you select your memory card size. The REALLY nice thing I like here is that you don't have to use those options specifically. You can actually type inside the box and specificy your own custom size. Have a 256 MB card but only want to use 150MB of it for the movie? Not a problem. Just key in 150.

Select your audio and video preferences and then click Calculate and Movie2MemCard will actually do a sanity check on your file and offer recommendations. Very nice.

A DOS window will pop-up which is where the acutal processing takes place. This will also give you a "counter" showing the process so far.

What I didn't like:

I did my initial review on version 1.1.0 and the interface wasn't quite as nice as it is now. However, credit to the developer on continuing with the development of this product and it has undergone a fairly substantial facelift and includes some new features in 1.2.0. I tried 1.2.0 and the developer didn't lie. Nice update.

The one problem I did have was that with the processing done inside a DOS window, certain errors would cause the script to terminate and the DOS window to close before I could see what the actual errors were. This was an annoyance. Maybe if this was logged to a file it would be nice.

Other than that, very happy with it.

Summary:

Nice product. Worth $15? I think so. Especially in light of the market price for these kinds of products.

From the contact I had with the developer it seems to be well supported too. That's nice to see. I converted a bunch of files and ran into an issue on only one file. As documented, if WMP9 cannot play the file then this program will not convert it. This was the case. I need a new codec for that particular file.
