Pocket Pc 2002 Operating System for PDAs
www.WindowsMobile.com 4/5
Pocket Pc or PPC is an operating system developed for pdas by Microsoft. It is
in full 16 bit color* and is slowly taking over palms territory in the pda
market. Many companys like Toshiba, HP, Compaq, Dell, and Viewsonic have a range
of PPC handhelds on the market. Most right now are PPC 2003 (Windows Mobile
2003) and some are still the version from last year, PPC 2002. This is a review
of the slightly older yet still common OS PPC 2002. Alot of the features in 03
and 02 are very similar.
Pocket Pc 2002 is a very advanced pda operating system. Standard it comes
with....
-Pocket Word
-Pocket Excel
-Pocket Internet Explorer(IE)
-MSN Messager
-Full Address book, calendar, email, and task manager (syncable with outlook)
-Windows Media Player 8 (9 oWn PPC 03)
-and some other basic programs
You can edit your word and excel files with their pocket versions. Windows media
player lets you play mp3s and wm files plus you can stream music and video from
the internet or your computer. Pocket internet explorer works best with pocket
optimized sites but will also work with most regular sites. Msn messager will
let you stay in touch with all your friends.
Along with the regular programs there is a huge selection of programs that are
free and some that are for sale for doing certain tasks. Pocket Gear is a big
provider of programs for PPCs (www.pocketgear.com).
Depending on your device* you can get GPS receivers and mapping software or even
dial up modems to get email while traveling. There also are wifi cards, camera
cards, and bluetooth cards.
Yet another cool feature of the PPC OS is that you can connect to the internet
through your cell phone**. This way you can get email or be on the internet
where ever your cell phone has service.
PPCs can also be used as remote controls* or even radios with option radio
cards. You also can sync to PPCs via IR to exchange contacts and even messages
with co workers. The possibilities are endless with PPC.
Since the screen is in color, you can view photos right off you camera* if your
camera takes the same type of flash memory as your PPC device. You can even edit
your pictures with optional software.
syncing to your pc is easy with Activesync. Just select what you want to sync
and then whenever you connect you PPC to your computer it will sync the selected
items. You also use activesync to install and backup programs.
I give the pocket pc 2002 OS 4 out of 5 for it being the best OS for PDAs
out there right now in my mind but i think there are still a few things
microsoft could come up with to improve it.
*Depends on PPC device
**Depends on PPC device, cell phone, and cell phone plan
